18 Things They Don't Tell You About Invisalign

So, you’ve heard of Invisalign, the modern-day magic that promises to straighten your teeth without the metallic glint of traditional braces.

My teeth - Invisalign journey

Hi, my name is Sarah and I completed my Invisalign journey in 75 weeks!

This blog documents my own personal experience with wearing Invisalign aligners - all the ups and the downs.

This blog does not constitute medical advice, so speak to a dental professional about any specific concerns.

But as with all things, there’s more to the story than meets the eye (or in this case, the tooth!). Before you dive headfirst into the world of clear aligners, let’s embark on a journey to uncover the 18 things they might not hand you in the glossy brochures.

From the tiny quirks to the unexpected revelations, we’ve got the full scoop.

Ready to get the inside track on Invisalign?

Let’s bite right in! 🦷🔍

More like this: I was rejected for Invisalign by 3 different providers!

1. They’re not entirely invisible

Despite the name – Invisalign – they’re not completely invisible! It’s almost as if its some kind of false advertising!

First of all, the aligners themselves are pretty discreet and look great from a distance.

But up close, it’s a different story.

You can see them. Plain as day. They make your teeth look shiny.

But, it’s really not a big deal. Anyone who is physically close enough to you who actually matters will know that you’re wearing aligners and will think nothing of it.

Also, there’s the attachments and the elastics that are almost never mentioned in their marketing material. More on that…. right now…

2. You will likely need attachments bonded to your teeth

Ah those pesky attachments! The bane of our existence!

Invisalign attachments are also known as buttons.

I personally don’t find the attachments so bad, and I have 15 of them.

Other people seem to get really irritated or conscious about them.

Fortunately, I’m not one of those people.

Attachments are tooth-colored bonding material, moulded into little shapes and then glued onto your teeth for the duration of your treatment.

They help the trays grip your teeth better so your teeth can easily move into the desired position.

They can even mean that your treatment will go faster, but at the cost of being less discreet.

This is one of the big aspects that makes Invisalign a lot more visible!

The attachments will have little dents built-in to your trays so your teeth will fit inside after the attachments have been attached.

3. Sometimes, elastics and hooks are needed too

It’s not just attachments – oh no!

Remember elastics that you had to wear as a teen with braces? Of if you didn’t have these, you probably knew someone who did.

With Invisalign – you may also need to wear elastics as part of your treatment!

They don’t tell you that in their fancy Instagram adverts, for sure!

Just like attachments, elastics are really not all that bad once you get used to them. They’re temporary, and will help you achieve a perfect smile much faster!

4. The trays get discolored and stained really easily

Discoloured and stained trays is another thing to get frustrated out.

Especially, as other brand’s clear aligners don’t seem to stain as much in comparison to Invisalign’s material.

It’s extremely frustrating when you whip your trays out to eat a popsicle, rinse out your mouth, pop the trays back in and and hour later, they’re bright green.

Using fancy cleaning solutions and ultra sonic cleaning pods can help, but the rarely remove the stains completely – and you’re often stuck with funky colored trays until next change day – d’oh!

5. Rescans and refinements are extremely common

Rescans, refinements and tracking issues – oh my!

Here’s another thing they don’t always tell you – your initial round of trays may not be your only set of trays!

Many people finish their initial round of trays and then require more trays at the end called refinements.

Also, sometimes your teeth don’t move as planned according to the ClinCheck simulation, so you have to have a rescan and start from tray #1 again – bummer.

You can reduce the need for need rescans and refinements by wearing your trays 20+ hours per day as prescribed and by using Chewies, but sometimes rescans and refinements are inevitabe.

The manufacturing process with Invisalign is not extremely quick – so once your new trays are ordered, you may need to wait 4-6 weeks for them to be delivered – double bummer.

6. Your treatment may take longer than you were quoted

This goes hand-in-hand with refinements and rescans.

If your treatment doesn’t go to plan, or you need additional refinement trays at the end of treatment, then your time spent in trays can be much longer than you first anticipated.

Many dentists and orthodontists will use the treatment time as a sales pitch:

“Done in 8 months!”

As the dentist winks as their assistant.

Unfortunately, this is just the way things are. Every person responds differently to orthodontic treatment and you sometimes just need to be patient while your teeth move into place.

7. Removing the trays in public never gets less awkward

At some point, you’re going to have to remove your trays in public and it will be awakward.

But, let’s keep this short and sweet – you’ll get over it.

Just find a quiet corner, use a pocket mirror and a PulTool or Orthokey and don’t forget to put your trays safely in their case after you’ve taken them out.

The amount of people whose trays end up in the trash, the floor, or worse is crazy!

Don’t be one of those people!

8. People really don’t care if you brush & floss your teeth in public bathrooms

As an Invisalign wearer, your hygiene habits have to be on point unless you want to finish you treatment with cavity-filled weakened teeth.

This often means brushing your teeth in *shock horror* a public bathroom.

Dun. Dun. DUN.

Yeah – people don’t care.

People don’t go into public bathrooms worrying about what other people are doing at the sink.

Just get on with your stuff, and let them get on with theirs.

9. You may develop a lisp and other speech changes

Urgh – The dreaded Invisalign lisp!

As these plastic trays are covering your teeth, as you adjust to this, your speech may sound different than usual.

This can also happen on tray change day as your teeth adjust to a new tray each week.

However – this is important – this lisp sounds worse inside your head!

Try recording yourself in a voice note or audio file on your phone – listen to it back – you’ll sound exactly the same as you usually so, sans lisp, and you can go about your day without worrying about it.

10. Your bite feels different from day one

Your teeth are happy in their position – the same position they’ve been in for many years.

Now you’ve come along and forced them to move using plastic trays!

The way things feel when you bite together is going to feel different and strange.

But what I found quite alarming was just how quickly this process happened!

It happened on the first day, ya’ll!

That’s right – day one. I don’t know if it’s the presence of attachments that made things feel different, but my bit immediately felt ‘off’ and it’s changing all the time.

11. You may need your teeth shaved and filed at the sides (IPR – Interproximal Reduction)

At your Invisalign consultation – or even at your tray fitting appointment – you may hear 3 letters being mentioned: I.P.R.

Well, as someone who has had IPR done on all my lower teeth, I can honestly say, you have nothing to worry about.

IPR or Interproximal Reduction means removing enamel from the sides of your teeth in order to make room.

Well, they only really remove fractions of a millimetre of enamel from each tooth, and only where its clinically necessary to do so.

If you have crowded or crooked teeth, where your teeth overlap or there’s not enough space to easily slide floss in between, then your teeth can’t always be straightened unless space is made first.

That space is created using a technique called IPR (filing in between the teeth – don’t be freaked out!)

Choosing IPR also can also avoid extracting healthy teeth for orthodontics.

During my first consultation for adult braces, the orthodontist wanted to extract 2 teeth, and I refused, which is why I had IPR instead!

IPR is less invasive than extractions, requires no anaesthetic and is over in a few seconds!

12. Get used to saliva and air bubbles getting trapped in the trays

Ah, the unexpected surprises of Invisalign! Just when you think you’ve got the hang of it, you might notice some extra saliva pooling in your trays or those pesky air bubbles making an appearance.

It’s a sensation that can be a tad… well, squishy.

When you first pop in a new set of trays, it’s not uncommon for a little air to get trapped inside. This can create a slight ballooning effect, especially near the front of the mouth.

And let’s not even get started on the drool factor.

With something new in your mouth, your salivary glands might go into overdrive for a bit.

But, like everything else with Invisalign, it’s all part of the journey.

Over time, you’ll develop tricks to minimize these little inconveniences.

A quick swish of water or a gentle press on the trays can help release trapped air.

And as for the saliva? Well, think of it as nature’s way of keeping your mouth hydrated! Embrace the journey, quirks and all, and remember: every bubble and droplet is a step closer to that dream smile.

13. Your daily routine will be altered

Welcome to the world of Invisalign, where your daily routine gets a little shake-up!

Remember those days when you’d casually sip on your coffee throughout the morning or snack on some chips in the afternoon?

Well, those days will need a bit of tweaking.

Every time you want to eat or drink something other than water, those trays must come out.

And after you’re done?

It’s time for a quick brush and rinse before those trays go back in. It might sound tedious, but it quickly becomes second nature.

Morning routines might extend by a few minutes as you clean your trays and ensure your teeth are sparkling clean before popping them back in.

But here’s the silver lining: many Invisalign users have reported better oral hygiene habits and even some weight loss (thanks to reduced snacking) during their treatment.

So, while it might seem like a bit of a hassle at first, think of it as an unexpected health boost.

14. You need to be extremely vigilant with dental hygiene

Step into the spotlight, dental hygiene!

With Invisalign, your oral care routine isn’t just a part of your day; it becomes the star of the show.

Gone are the days of a quick brush in the morning and evening. Now, every meal and snack becomes an encore performance for your toothbrush and floss.

Why the heightened attention, you ask? Well, trapping food particles or residue under your trays is a big no-no.

Not only can it lead to bad breath (yikes!), but it can also increase the risk of cavities and gum issues.

And trust me, you don’t want to be dealing with those while on your Invisalign journey.

This rigorous routine has its perks.

Many users find that their teeth have never been cleaner.

Plus, the discipline you develop during this period can set you up for a lifetime of excellent oral habits.

So, embrace your new role as the ultimate dental hygiene enthusiast.

Stock up on travel-sized toothpaste, keep a toothbrush at work, and maybe even invest in some interdental brushes or water flossers.

Your teeth will thank you, and that post-Invisalign smile will be not just straighter, but also brighter and healthier!

15. Plain water will become your drink of choice for the length of your treatment

Say Cheers to Water: Your New Best Beverage Buddy

Raise a glass (of water, of course) to the unsung hero of the Invisalign journey!

While you might have been a coffee aficionado or a soda sipper before, with those clear aligners snugly in place, water will swiftly become your go-to drink.

And honestly? It’s a refreshing change in more ways than one.

Drinking colored or sugary beverages with your trays in can lead to staining and potential tooth decay.

Imagine sipping on your favorite caramel latte and having that sweet liquid just sitting between your teeth and the trays.

Not the best scenario for your pearly whites!

But with water? No worries! It’s clear, clean, and won’t leave any residue behind.

Plus, it’s the perfect palate cleanser after a meal, ensuring no sneaky food particles remain when you pop your trays back in.

This new hydration habit can have some fantastic side effects too.

Better skin, improved digestion, and a general feeling of well-being?

🤚 Yes, please!

So, while you might miss your daily dose of caffeine or the fizz of a soda, think of this as a temporary detox.

By the time your Invisalign journey ends, you’ll not only have a stunning smile but also a newfound appreciation for the simplest, most vital drink of all.

Cheers to that!

16. Be prepared for mouth ulcers, canker sores and scratched gums

Brace yourself: gum irritation is about the join the party

While the dream of a perfect smile is all glitz and glamour, the road to get there can sometimes be a bit… bumpy.

Those clear aligners, as fantastic as they are, are still foreign objects in your mouth.

Especially when you’re on tray #1, your mouth might react with a “Hey, what’s this?” kind of response.

The edges of the trays, even though they’re designed to be smooth, can sometimes irritate the soft tissues of your mouth, leading to minor scratches or ulcers.

And if you’ve ever had a mouth ulcer, you know the drill. They’re tiny, but boy, can they pack a punch in the discomfort department!

This doesn’t happen to everyone, and even if it does, there are ways to combat it.

Dental wax can be a lifesaver, acting as a cushion between the tray and any sore spots.

Rinsing with warm salt water or Peroxyl Mouthwash can also help soothe ulcers and promote healing.

Remember, it’s all about adapting.

Just as you got used to the feeling of the trays, your mouth will adjust to these minor irritations. And with each new tray, you’ll become a pro at ensuring maximum comfort.

So, keep that end goal in sight and arm yourself with a little patience (and maybe some dental wax). Those fleeting discomforts will be a distant memory once you’re flashing that flawless smile!

17. You have some level of control of your treatment

Surprise, surprise!

While it might seem like the Invisalign journey is a set path, there’s actually a degree of control that rests in your hands.

And no, we’re not just talking about the decision to start the treatment.

First and foremost, the success of your treatment largely depends on your commitment.

Those aligners aren’t going to wear themselves!

The recommended 20-22 hours a day might sound daunting, but it’s crucial for keeping your treatment on track.

Then there’s the care of the aligners.

While your orthodontist provides the roadmap, it’s up to you to ensure those trays stay clean and clear.

Regular rinsing, avoiding colored drinks, and using the right cleaning techniques can make a world of difference.

But here’s the real kicker: communication.

Regular check-ins with your orthodontist and voicing any concerns or discomforts can significantly influence the course of your treatment. If something feels off or isn’t fitting right, speak up!

Your feedback can help tailor the treatment to your needs.

For example, if you’re going on vacation and you know you won’t be wearing your trays for 20+ hours per day, you may choose to extend the wear time of that try for an extra week or two to ‘make up’ for lost time.

And let’s not forget about those little extras:

Using Chewies to ensure a snug fit, wearing your elastics consistently if you have them, and following any additional advice from your orthodontist can accelerate your progress.

So, while the trays and the tech are undoubtedly impressive, remember that you play a starring role in this smile story. Embrace the journey, take charge where you can, and watch as your dedication transforms your grin into the one you’ve always dreamed of!

18. Accidentally throwing your trays in the trash can easily happen – always use the case!

Oh, the tales of woe from Invisalign users who’ve accidentally tossed their trays! It’s a story as old as time (or at least as old as clear aligners).

Imagine this: You’re out at a restaurant, enjoying a meal with friends. Before digging in, you discreetly remove your aligners and wrap them in a napkin for safekeeping. Fast forward to the end of the meal, and in the hustle of cleaning up, that napkin-wrapped treasure gets thrown away. The horror!

But here’s the thing: it happens to the best of us. Distractions, forgetfulness, or just plain old bad luck can lead to those precious trays ending up in the trash.

So, what’s the solution? The case, of course!

Your Invisalign kit comes with a nifty little case designed specifically to house your trays when they’re not in your mouth. It’s not just for show; it’s your tray’s best friend and protector. Make it a habit to always, ALWAYS use it.

Not only does the case protect your trays from accidental disposal, but it also keeps them safe from potential damage and contamination.

Think about it: a tray left on a table or in a pocket is exposed to all sorts of dangers, from curious pets to crushing weights.

And let’s face it, replacing lost or damaged trays can be a hassle and potentially costly. So, save yourself the heartache and potential setback in your treatment.

In the world of Invisalign, the mantra is clear:

If it’s not in your face, put it in the case!

Make it a part of your routine, and those tray-trashing tales will be stories you laugh about rather than experience first-hand.
