So, gather around because do I have a story for you. It’s about my Invisalign journey, which, let me tell you, started off with a bang.

Losing Invisalign attachments is a common problem, but 3 of my attachments fell off within a week of having them put on!

My teeth - Invisalign journey

Hi, my name is Sarah and I completed my Invisalign journey in 75 weeks!

This blog documents my own personal experience with wearing Invisalign aligners - all the ups and the downs.

This blog does not constitute medical advice, so speak to a dental professional about any specific concerns.

What are Invisalign Attachments (aka Buttons)

In case you don’t already know, most Invisalign cases require you to have small “attachments” or “buttons” bonded onto your teeth.

They’re tooth colored and they’re supposed to stay bonded to your teeth (even when you take the trays out) for the duration of your treatment.

Just a week into my teeth-straightening adventure, not one, but TWO (actually THREE) of my Invisalign attachments decided they had enough of my mouth and embarked on an escape mission.

Day 1 into wearing these bad boys, I was feeling pretty good.

“This isn’t so bad,” I thought, admiring my almost invisible aligners in the mirror, completely unaware of the drama that was about to unfold.

Losing Attachment #1

Then came the fateful morning. I’m enjoying my breakfast, nothing too hazardous – just a soft bagel, when I feel something strange, like a tiny pebble in my mouth. I panic.

Is it a tooth?

Did I just crunch my tooth like it was part of my breakfast?

Upon closer inspection, I find the tiny culprit. It’s one of my Invisalign attachments, looking pretty pleased with itself for pulling off the great escape.

At this point, I’m thinking, “Okay, no biggie, just a minor setback.” I call my orthodontist, and we have a good laugh.

They tell me that it’s actually fairly common, and invite me in to come in and get it reattached.

Problem solved, right?

Oh, how naïve I was…

A hearty bagel was responsible for my first missing Invisalign attachment 🤦‍♀️

Losing Attachment #2

Fast forward to day 6. I’m cautiously sipping on a smoothie, treating my teeth like they’re fine china, when suddenly, I feel that all-too-familiar sensation again.

Another attachment, deciding it wants to explore the world beyond my mouth, leaves its post.

At this point, I’m half expecting the rest of them to start jumping ship like it’s some sort of dental Titanic.

So, here I am, two attachments down in the first week, wondering if my mouth is some sort of high-security prison from which all attachments dream of escaping. I head back to my orthodontist, who’s starting to find the whole saga as amusing as I am.

They reattach the runaway attachment, and we’re back in business.

The Third Escapee

A few days after my re-attachment appointment, I was eating some fries and decided to run my tongue along the front of my teeth…

Dang it. At some point, I’d lost another attachment!

But I’ve no idea when I lost it.

Confused face after losing invisalign attachments in the first week!
But where did it go!?

Unfortunately, they can’t fit me in again, so my Ortho just told me to continue without it for now!

I’ve now become extra cautious, treating my attachments like delicate flowers that might wilt (or pop off) at any moment.

Invisalign might be a journey to a perfect smile, but it’s also an adventure filled with unexpected twists, turns, and the occasional rogue attachment.

Keep your sense of humor about you, and remember, it’s all part of the process.

So, to any new Invisalign wearers out there, if your attachments decide to go on a little adventure of their own, just know you’re not alone.

Keep smiling, keep laughing, and let’s all keep our attachments in check.

Quick Tips for Invisalign Wearers: When Attachments Go AWOL

  1. Stay Calm: It’s a minor hiccup, not a disaster!
  2. Speed Dial Your Ortho: Make an appointment promptly to get the attachment(s) reattached. The sooner, the better, to keep your treatment on track.
  3. Mind Your Meals: While waiting for your ortho appointment, stick to softer foods to avoid further mutinies from the remaining attachments.
  4. Laugh It Off: Remember, it’s all part of the journey. Share your story with fellow Invisalign wearers; you’re definitely not alone in this!

Final Thoughts about Losing Invisalign Attachments so soon

I was a bit frustrated that 3 attachments fell off so soon into my journey and one of them was never replaced.

However, it’s not the end of the world.

Keep smiling, and remember, every great smile has a story behind it. Yours just happens to include adventurous attachments!

P.S. Always remember to consult with your dental professional for any specific concerns or questions. Your smile is unique, and they're the experts to guide you through!
